About San Carlos
San Carlos, “The City of Good Living,” is located in the center of the San Francisco Bay Area and has everything at its doorstep. San Francisco is 25 miles north and San Jose is 25 miles south. San Carlos boasts an ideal climate, good government, an outstanding school system, attractive residential areas, a fine shopping district, excellent restaurants, a modern industrial and commercial area and plenty of open space. As part of the northern end of Silicon Valley, San Carlos hosts several technology companies and is the address of many of the West Coast’s biotech and medical instrumentation firms. You’ll find friendly, involved people here and an inviting community atmosphere.

Community Facilities

Health: There are two hospitals located within 4 miles of San Carlos: Sequoia Hospital and Kaiser Hospital, both in Redwood City. San Carlos has 24 physicians/surgeons, 24 dentists, 6 optometrists and 14 chiropractors. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation has proposed an 18-acre medical campus (including a 110-bed hospital) to be built by 2010 in San Carlos on Industrial Road.

Education: 94.6% of City residents 25 and older are high school graduates; 49.8% have bachelor’s or graduate degrees. There are 4 outstanding elementary schools, 1 charter learning center, 2 middle schools, 2 nearby public high schools, a charter high school and 2 community colleges in the area. There is 1 private school and there are 9 nursery or pre-schools. Six major, neighboring universities include the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford and San Jose State University.

Transportation

Highways:
San Carlos is served by US 101 and Interstate 280 for north/south traffic and is halfway between State Highways 92 and 84 for east/west traffic across the bay and to the coast. Major local streets are Holly Street, Industrial Road and El Camino Real (Hwy 82).

Rail: Commuter train service is provided by CalTrain to San Francisco and San Jose from the historic San Carlos Depot on El Camino near Holly.

Truck: Approximately 50 common carriers are in the area including two with terminals in San Carlos. Overnight delivery is available to all points within 500 miles and all California cities.

Bus: Regional and local bus service provided by San Mateo County Transit (SamTrans) from San Francisco to Palo Alto. SamTrans also coordinates its ate service with other regional agencies (CalTrain, BART, Santa Clara County Transit, etc.)

Water: San Carlos is 25 miles from San Francisco port facilities and 4 miles from the Port of Redwood City.

Air: San Francisco International Airport is located 11 miles to the north. San Jose International Airport is 25 miles to the south. The local San Carlos Airport is an important business and transportation asset to the community. It is currently home to 500 aircraft and many aviation related businesses, including air charter services, full-service maintenance, aircraft rental and flight instruction. Approximately half of all airport operations are business-related or revenue-generating. Another function of the airport is as a base for emergency service activities.
